Is a design company right for you?

Description:

A graphic design company these days is typically a creative team that’s your go to creative department. With anywhere from 2-24 creative professionals at hand. They may service 3 larger accounts with a collection of smaller companies mixed in at any given time. Design companies are great for those who have ongoing creative needs with small and large projects alike. They are best at executing your established strategic brand presence. However, they can contribute to your strategic positioning with research and analysis. Ideal for small to mid-capital companies.

How do design companies work?

Design company benefits:

Design companies are often extremely responsive, versatile and like to really dig deep into understanding your business and the market you serve. They emphasize customer service because they have a larger vested interest in your success. Your account could likely represent a significant portion of their pie, thereby creating a strong vested interest in you succeeding. As a result, as you succeed, they succeed and you mutually grow together. It’s this common circumstance that makes for a more personal experience. Often times, you’ll also be able to have a direct line to the owner/s of the company. They also likely have strong value due to carrying much less overhead costs than larger agencies. You’ll likely have access to strong creative talent within your budget.

Design company drawbacks:

Design companies may not be as ideally suited for large cap companies as they do not carry the cache/gravitas associated with being the large company’s agency of record. They may struggle to meet your needs quickly, if the number or size of scope of your projects quickly increases with little warning. They lean more toward the doer camp rather than the planner camp. In some cases, they may not be the best for strategizing and big data analysis. You would likely call a design firm when you’ve established direction.
